What is Live Craps by Evolution?

Craps Live is a live casino table game from Evolution, and it was first released back in 2020. The game has the “crown”, if you like, of being the first live version of craps ever released in the online gambling world. Now, for a game with such a rich and well-known history, that’s quite surprising, but there’s a simple reason why it took so long: craps is complex.

A full craps table in a land-based casino, for example, requires four members of staff to run it, and there’s a complex betting layout, different rules compared to most live casino games, and an RTP that’s much more favourable than mostgames.

Still, that didn’t deter Evolution, and in our guide, we’re going to walk you through exactly how their Craps Live game works, what to expect when playing, and how it all comes together.

Gameplay & Features

The core objective in Craps Live is the same as it’s always been, and your goal is just to try and predict the outcome of a roll of two dice. Now, that sounds very simple in theory, but it’s actually much more complex than that, because craps has dozens of potential betting combinations that are all split between one-roll bets that resolve on a single throw. There are also multi-roll bets that stay live into multiple rounds, and this is where things can start to get a bit confusing.

Evolution Gaming has also added a few tweaks, though the core gameplay remains the same. The main “feature”, if you like, is the “My Numbers” mechanic, which acts as a display panel in the main interface showing every possible dice total from 2 to 12. It then shows the payouts for those combos, along with showing how much you have on each bet.

There’s also an Easy Mode function, which is designed for players who find the normal craps layout to be a bit overwhelming; this version of the interface strips everything back and displays only the most common bets: Pass Line, Don’t Pass, Field, and a few others. Evolution has also added a tutorial into the mix, which is a nice touch.

Table, Interface & User Experience

The studio Evolution has built for Craps Live is one of the more atmospheric-looking games they’ve designed, in our opinion, and the game is based on a 1920s speakeasy theme, which they’ve made a really good job with, which I think we can all agree on.

The table itself features alligator-skin panelling on its sides, and it kind of makes you feel as though you’re sat in a back-room gambling den, with a high-end cocktail bar vibe also on display – and it just works.

One of the most controversial aspects of the game was the decision Evolution made to remove the human shooter with a mechanical arm. You see, on a land-based craps table, one of the players rolls the dice, and that forms a core part of the game’s “social DNA”. Online, that’s just impossible, and simply having the dealer throw the dice would likely raise quite a lot of questions about the fairness of the game.

To get around this, Evolution chose to use a mechanical arm, and this solves both problems quite well. The dealer loads the dice, and the mechanical arm then launches them onto the table at different speeds and angles.

How to Play Live Craps

Craps Live follows the standard two-phase structure of traditional craps, and all rounds play out as follows:

1. Betting Phase:

At the start of each round, you’ll have around 15-17 seconds to place your bets. You simply choose your chip value and decide where on the table you want to wager. If you’re in Easy Mode, only the simplified bet spots will be visible. You can also use the 2x button to instantly double your current bet, while the Undo button reverses any chips you had already placed.

2. Come Out Roll:

Every new round begins with a Come Out roll. Pass Line bets win if the dice are rolled and total 7 or 11, which is known as a “natural”, and lose on 2, 3, or 12 – known as “craps”. Don’t Pass bets are the opposite, so you win on 2 or 3, lose on 7 or 11, and push on 12. If the Come Out roll produces any other total (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10), that number becomes the Point, and the game moves to the Point phase.

3. Point Roll:

Once the Point is established, the puck on screen flips from OFF to ON, and you’ll then be able to place additional bets. This includes Come/Don’t Come bets, and Odds – which are placed behind Pass/Don’t Pass. The Point roll continues until either the Point number is rolled again or a 7 is rolled, the latter of which ends the round and sends everything back to the Come Out phase.

While that’s the core gameplay in a nutshell, there are also proposition bets, and these always resolve on the very next throw of the dice. Any Seven, Any Craps, Hardways, Field bets, and specific Craps bets on individual totals like 2 or 12 are available, and these are designed for players who want higher variance and higher win potential.

Payouts, Probabilities & RTP

The RTP and house edge in Craps Live vary a lot depending on which bets you make, and this matters more here than in most live dealer games. The Pass Line and Don’t Pass bets, combined with maximum odds, for example, carry an insanely high RTP of 99.17%, which is pretty much the best you’ll find in any casino game.

On the other end of the scale, however, the RTP can drop to as low as 83.33%, and the max payout in a single round is 30:1, which can be won by winning a Craps 2 or Craps 12 bet.

The payout for Pass Line/Don’t Pass is 1:1, which is also the same payout as Come/Don’t Come. Odds pay true odds; Place 6 or 8 pays 7:6, Place 5 or 9 pays 7:5, and Place 4 or 10 pays 9:5. All payouts pretty much mirror what you’d see in any version of Craps, with the only real difference being the proposition bets, although even these are sometimes offered in land-based casinos, too.

Live Craps Streaming Quality

Like all Evolution live dealer games, the production quality of Craps Live is superb, and the presentation is really high-end, in our opinion. Sure, it doesn’t have the gimmicky look and feel like we see in other games like Crazy Time or Monopoly Big Baller, but it plays very well, and the provider is clearly trying to appeal to a more experienced type of player.

The audio and visuals run pretty much perfectly across all devices. Even if your internet connection drops, Evolution has technology that automatically changes the stream quality to try and prevent you from experiencing any dips or lag!

Craps Live Stat Tracking

The dynamic statistics boards built into the game are good – but, as is the case with most Evolution games, they’re not enough for a lot of players. Yes, they show you hot numbers, popular bets, and the game’s history in real time, but anything beyond that, along with historical data, is unavailable.

Unlike a lot of live dealer games, however, third-party craps stats trackers are much harder to find, and that’s just due to the popularity of the game. Unlike say, Red Door Roulette, or MONOPOLY Roulette Live, Evolution’s live Craps game just hasn’t generated the same level of “buzz” around it.

That’s why, here at CasinoTrackpot, we’re excited to announce that we now have a Craps Live stats tracking tool, allowing you to see much more detailed information about the game, along with historical data!

Conclusion & Verdict

Craps Live is a good addition to the Evolution game catalogue, and it’s also quite a notable one. The fact that Evolution managed to pull off a live dealer craps game which no other provider has tried before is impressive, and sure, it may not be the most-played game in the world, but it’s designed to appeal to regular, experienced players, and that’s precisely the type of player it seems to, indeed, attract.

The mechanical arm, the My Numbers display, and the dual-mode interface all work really well together, and, most importantly, none of them feels like a gimmick.

If you’re new to craps, this is the best possible entry point. The craps tutorial and Easy Mode will get you up and running quickly, and the RTP is higher than any other casino game you’ll find, so if you can get to grips with how it all works, it can quickly become quite satisfying to play!
