Lightning Storm is a 2024 release from Evolution, and while it may not have achieved the levels of success that we’ve seen from some of their other titles, notably Crazy Time, it’s still definitely a game worth checking out because it merges some superb graphics, five unique bonus rounds, and a unique betting structure that caters to both cautious andrisk-seeking players.

Lightning Storm boasts a maximum win potential of 20,000x, and the RTP of 97.44% is one of the highest in the industry. Lightning Storm is broadcast live from an impressive-looking studio designed to resemble a mad scientist’s laboratory, and you’ll see it with neon-lit equipment, fog effects, and steampunk-inspired decorations that really make you feel like you’re in Frankenstein’s lab!

At the centre of the action, you’ll see a giant 39-segment DigiWheel, and unlike the physical wheels used in the likes of Funky Time, the DigiWheel is entirely digital. It’s not a physical wheel, which won’t suit everyone, but the digital-first design allows for a few advantages over traditional mechanics; faster spin times, dynamic segment repositioning each round, and easy integration of the game’s augmented reality effects.

Wheel, Interface & User Experience

On the wheel, 19 of the 39 segments are instant win “Leaf” positions, and there’s a whopping 20 bonus segments, too, which are all randomly assigned to numbered positions. This means the wheel’s layout changes every single round, which is quite unique.

The interface is clean and professionally designed, though admittedly more complex than earlier Evolution game shows, and the betting options are colour-coded to make it easy to see where you’re placing your bets. Before each spin begins, random segments are awarded multipliers between 2x and 50x.

How to Play Lightning Storm

Lightning Storm follows the classic big-wheel formula, but with several slightly more complex variations in how you can actually place bets. Once a new game round begins, you have 15 seconds to place your bets. Your main betting options are:

1. Leaf Bets:

You can bet on the 19 Leaf instant win segments, all paying 1:1.

2. Number Bets:

You can choose to bet on individual numbered segments that correspond to bonus rounds. If the wheel lands on a number you’ve covered, and it contains a bonus symbol, too, you trigger the corresponding bonus game.

3. All Odd/All Even:

Betting on either all odd-numbered segments or all even-numbered segments.

4. Storm Chaser Bet:

This is quite a unique betting option, and when played, it places a wager on whichever numbered segment contains the Lightning Storm bonus symbol, the rarest and highest-paying icon. It costs 2.7x your base game stake, and it’s basically designed for bonus hunters.

5. X Chaser Bet:

This is also quite a unique bet type, and when used, it automatically covers all numbered segments that have received a 2x-50x multiplier boost. It costs 7.8x your bet, so it’s a little more pricey.

6. Pre-Spin:

Now, before the wheel spins, Evolution’s system randomly assigns multipliers, between 2x and 50x, to a random number of segments on the wheel. These are displayed clearly, so you know exactly which segments contain a multiplier before the wheel comes to a stop.

You’ll then see the live host spin the DigiWheel, and a visual flapper mechanism plays out the game just as though it were a real wheel. When the wheel comes to a stop, the result is determined, and it’s either a Leaf instant win or a numbered bonus round trigger.

Lightning Storm Bonus Rounds Explained

The five bonus rounds are where Lightning Storm shows what it’s really capable of, and each feature offers something different, and four of the five have a maximum win potential of 10,000x, aside from the flagship Lightning Storm feature, which can pay up to 20,000x.

Hot Spot Bonus Game

Hot Spot is the most interactive of the five bonuses, and when it’s triggered, you’re presented with a massive 9×12 grid with a total of 108 tiles. Every tile is covered with a multiplier value. Your job is simply to select one tile. 

Once you’ve done so, the multiplier behind it doesn’t reveal itself immediately. Instead, a 3×3 hotspot randomly travels across the grid. If this hotspot stops over your chosen tile, then the multiplier beneath is doubled.

Monster Mash Bonus Game

Monster Mash does a solid job of playing into the Frankenstein theme, and once triggered, you’re tasked with “building” a monster, achieved by spinning three vertical reels stacked on top of one another.

The top reel shows heads, the middle shows torsos, and the bottom shows legs. Each body part carries a multiplier value. Blue body parts receive random multipliers between 1x and 50x, while gold parts carry global multipliers between 4x and 6x. When a gold part is revealed, all remaining multipliers on the board are multiplied by that global value, and the final payout is then awarded.

Inside the bonus round, a lever is pulled by the host to spin the reels, and this continues until they lock into a final head-torso-leg combo, at which point all three multipliers are added together, and you’re then paid whatever the value is!

Battery Charger Bonus Game

Battery Charger is a bonus round that plays out like a mechanical slot machine with a pretty big twist. The round starts on a conveyor belt with ten batteries, where nine contain standard multipliers, and one contains a “global” multiplier, 4x, 5x, or 6x.

Batteries drop one by one and are tested by a machine. If the charger wheel turns red, the battery “fails” and is removed from the belt before the next battery drops in for testing. When the wheel turns green, you’ve found a winning battery, and its multiplier becomes your prize.

Where things get interesting is that when a battery with a global multiplier is revealed, all remaining batteries on the belt are multiplied by that global value before the next test occurs. As you can imagine, if you manage to land multiple global multipliers, things can get very interesting, very quickly.

FireBall Bonus Game

FireBall is Lightning Storm’s only truly “live” bonus round, and this means it uses physical mechanics rather than just a random number generator. The game board is a pretty clever-looking studio installation, and you’ll see a floor covered in 149 pockets, each containing either a standard multiplier or a “Double” symbol.

A ball is dropped from above, and it then bounces across the grid until it drops down to the bottom of the screen and comes to rest in one pocket. If it lands on a double, all multiplier values on the board double, and the ball is launched again. It’s possible for this process to repeat multiple times, and the bonus round ends when the ball lands in a pocket that contains a standard multiplier.

Lightning Storm Bonus Round

This is the game’s signature bonus, and it’s also the rarest, appearing on just 1 of 39 segments, working out to, roughly, a 2.56% hit rate. When triggered, the action shifts to the studio roof, where a giant billboard is seen, and this billboard contains eight regular multiplier slots and three “global multiplier” slots. 

You have a decision to make here: select one of three lightning strikes before they occur, and when they do, they trace paths across the billboard, selecting one or more multipliers.

Now, your selected lightning strike determines which multipliers are highlighted. The display also shows real-time player voting, so you can see what everyone else is predicting, which is quite a nice little touch.

If you land on a global multiplier during your strike sequence, all multipliers on the board multiply by that global value before the result is finished, and it’s this, in conjunction with the (up to) 50x multipliers, that offers a maximum win potential of up to 20,000x!

Lightning Storm’s payout structure is quite impressive, and it’s also heavily influenced by the betting options you choose to make. Now, the simplest payout is 1:1, and that’s for the Leaf instant wins. Of course, you’ll be hoping to hit multipliers here, to benefit the most.

Conclusion & Verdict

For us, Lightning Storm represents one of Evolution’s most technically ambitious and creative live game show releases to date. It’s clear they’ve put a huge amount of time, effort, and money into developing every aspect of the game, from the DigiWheel’s dynamic segment repositioning to the five bonus games that feature augmented reality. It’s certainly come a long way from the early days of Monopoly LIVE, that’s for sure!

Now, it’s fair to say that Evolution has done a pretty fantastic job with the tech and visual side of things, but that doesn’t automatically mean that it’s a good game. It’s quite complex, especially when you take the betting options into account, and if you’re a casual player looking for something easy and relaxing to have a go on, then this may be a little bit too much for you, especially if you are a risk-averse player. 

If, however, you’re the type of player who prioritises variety and high bonus frequency, then, yes, Lightning Storm is definitely a title you will want to check out. The five different bonus rounds ensure the gameplay never feels boring or monotonous. We really like the innovative Storm Chaser and X Chaser betting options, too, as they are designed to appeal to, and reward, players who are happy to take a higher amount of risk.

It may not have developed the cult-like fanbase seen playing other Evolution live dealer games like Monopoly Big Baller or Ice Fishing, but Lightning Storm is a fun, unpredictable, and creative release, and it’s a sign, in our opinion, of exactly what the studio is capable of doing in the months and years to come!
